It looks after itself

Repair everything

One button looks at every part of Conch, fixes what it can, and names the one thing only you can do.

Conch looks after itself. It fixes most problems before you notice them, and what it can't fix ends in one plain sentence with one button. When something seems off, there is one place to look.

The one button

Open Settings → Health and press Repair everything. Conch looks at every part of itself at once and fixes what is safe to fix. The list fills in as each part answers, within a few seconds.

A repair never deletes anything and never signs you out. Check again only looks.

From anywhere, press CtrlK and choose Repair everything.

What it looks at

When all is well, it's one calm line. Show details opens the whole list, in groups:

  • Providers: each one you use is installed, signed in and answering.
  • Apps and Talk to me here: every app and chat app you connected still works.
  • This computer: the browser, search, the internet, disk space, and whether Conch's files are private to you.
  • Your data: backups, passwords, memory and undo.
  • Updates: Conch and the programs it uses. See Updates.
  • Routines and Tasks: anything that is waiting for you.

When it needs you

What Conch couldn't fix opens by itself, first in its group. Each has one sentence and one button: sign in again, install or update a program, open the right page, or copy the one command only you can run.

Fixed on its own

Further down the same page, Fixed on its own lists what Conch repaired by itself lately, one sentence each. It's there to reassure you. Nothing in it needs you.

Without asking, Conch:

  • starts itself again after a crash;
  • starts on the next free port when another program has taken its usual one;
  • sets aside one of its own files that got damaged, and carries on with what still reads;
  • renews an expired sign-in to a connected app, and tries again when a service was down for a moment;
  • reconnects a bot whose connection dropped;
  • holds a message that couldn't go while you were offline, and sends it when you're back.

A program a feature needs

Some features lean on a program that isn't part of Conch. When one is missing, Conch doesn't report an error. It offers one button.

  • It looks first. Conch finds a program wherever it was installed, and runs the copy it found.
  • It installs what it can. The button says Install and the program's name. Conch shows the command it runs and the installer's progress, and only installs what needs no administrator. Whatever was waiting carries on by itself.
  • It links to the rest. When only you can install a program, Conch links to its website and notices when the program arrives.
  • It points at the switch. When a program is there but turned off inside another app, Conch names the setting and offers to open that app.

Only your press starts an install. Your assistant can't install anything. If you sign in to Conch, it asks you to confirm it's you first.
