Talk to me here

Slack

A private DM with your assistant, in your workspace.

  • About 4 minutes
  • A bot of your own
  • No public address
  • Groups only if you turn them on
  • Nobody gets in unless you let them

Connect it

In Conch, open Apps, choose Talk to me here, then Slack. Slack makes the app from settings Conch fills in; you press a few buttons and copy two keys.

  1. Make the Slack app. Conch opens Slack with everything filled in. Pick your workspace, press Next, then Create.
  2. Install it, and copy its key. In the app's settings, open Install App and press Install to Workspace, then Allow. Copy the Bot User OAuth Token. It starts with xoxb-.
  3. Let it stay connected. Open Basic Information, scroll to App-Level Tokens and press Generate Token and Scopes. Name it "conch", add the scope connections:write, and press Generate. Copy the token. It starts with xapp-.
  4. Say hello. Send your app a direct message. Conch asks Is this you? with your name and the message. Press That's me.

Paste each key anywhere on Conch's page, in either order. Conch sorts out which is which and checks both with Slack.

Your first hello

Once Conch knows it's you, the app greets you by name.

  1. You:
    hi
  2. Conch:
Hi Ada! 👋 I’m Conch, and I’m connected to Conch on your computer. Ask me anything.

Good to know

  • Why two keys. The first lets the app speak. The second lets Conch reach Slack from your computer, with no public address.
  • Slack showed an empty form? Conch has the settings ready to paste: on the first step, open Slack showed an empty form?
  • While it works your message gets 👀. Slack has no "typing…" for apps.
  • Direct messages, and channels you turn on. Invite the app to a channel (/invite @yourapp) and mention it: the channel shows on its page in Conch, off. Turn it on there, and it answers whoever mentions it: you as in a DM, everyone else in words only. See In a group. An app made before October 2026 needs Reinstall to Workspace after adding the app_mentions:read scope and the app_mention event, or it never hears a mention.
  • The same app reads Slack for you too. Slack is one app in Conch, with one page. To let your assistant search and catch up on your channels with any model, press Set it up on the channel's page, or Set up beside Read & search on Slack's: it needs one more key from the same app, the User OAuth Token. See Apps.
  • Already let it read Slack? Turn on Talk to me here on Slack's page in Apps. The first step is done already: the app is made. You copy its bot token from the same Install App page, and make the app-level token.
